AI for insurance in Canada is already past the proof-of-concept stage at the large carriers, mostly in fraud detection, pricing and straight-through processing of simple claims. The bigger opportunity for mid-size insurers, MGAs and brokerages is in the documents: first notices of loss, medical and repair reports, broker submissions, loss runs and policy wordings that people still read end to end.
Regulators are watching closely. Federally regulated insurers come under OSFI’s revised model risk guideline in May 2027, Québec insurers under the AMF’s AI guideline the same month, and every insurer answers to provincial fair-treatment expectations. The winning approach keeps a licensed person on each decision and makes the AI’s work easy to audit.
