AI in healthcare in Canada is arriving first where the paperwork is heaviest. AI scribes for clinical notes are already being rolled out to family physicians in several provinces, and health authorities are testing AI on referral management, patient correspondence and scheduling. Diagnostic AI moves more slowly, and should: it is regulated as a medical device.
For most organizations, the realistic first step is administrative and documentation work around care rather than inside it: faxed referrals, intake forms, wait-list management, prior authorizations and letters. Those projects cut real hours, carry less clinical risk, and can be built to satisfy provincial health privacy laws from day one.
